An often overlooked home security risk is your mailbox.  With the huge increase in identity theft, everyone should consider getting a secure locking mailbox to protect their privacy.  These days, identity thieves attempt to steal your bank statements, investment statements, and other bills, in the hopes of using your personal info to create new identification for themselves and rob you blind before you even know it.  With a Security Locking mailbox, you are no longer an easy target and the thieves will move on to easier pickings.  That being said, tell your neighbors about these secure locking mailboxes, and keep your entire neighborhood safe.

What is a Secure Locking Mailbox?

A secure locking mailbox is an affordable and secure mailbox that is specially designed to greatly reduce the threat of mail theft.  The delivered mail is slid down into a locked storage area that can only be accessed with a key, while your local mailman can still deliver it without using a key.  A good locking mailbox usually has a large storage area for incoming mail allowing you to continue to collect mail while away on business or vacation for extended periods.  It should also include an outgoing mail slot as well.

Most are made of rugged polyethylene plastic, which is very durable, yet light weight and affordable.  This material is nicely resistant to vandalism, including paint, impact from cars, bats, etc and are generally very easy to mount.  A Secure locking mailbox is useful for both residential and business use and are becoming more and more common, as identity theft continues to increase.

I have just recently installed the MailGuard 580M Security Mailbox pictured above, which I purchased online through Amazon.com.   It was only $82 and included free shipping!  It looks nice and I really appreciate the large opening which allows larger envelopes and small packages to be inserted easily.  The MailGuard 580M is made of polyethylene, though there are other companies selling secure mailboxes made of aluminum or steel.  They are generally more expensive and not as attractive as far as I was concerned.

So if you are concerned about the safety of your mail and your identity, do yourself a favor and consider a Secure Locking Mailbox.  You’ll sleep a lot easier.
