How Vigilos ESM Works
Vigilos ESM software combines on-site data collection, evaluation and management with a powerful distributed database architecture. The result is a software system that supports all on-site security management needs, yet can be deployed across a global organization to create a true enterprise-wide security management solution.
This simultaneous independent operation of each location and enterprise integration of all locations is possible because of the Vigilos ESM software's unique multi-tier database architecture. This unique software architecture provides each location with all software and administrative capabilities necessary to operate independently, and simultaneously enables an unlimited number of unique locations to be linked together using an Oracle master database that enables a total enterprise solution.
System Design
The Vigilos ESM is designed for geographically distributed facilities, whether large or small, that generate data from their security, transaction, and facility infrastructure. With these needs in mind, the functional requirements mandated a system built to optimize modularity, scalability, and extensibility.
Vigilos is built using a patent-pending distributed architecture that allows modular growth in low-cost increments, virtually limitless scalability, and a highly robust system. As depicted below, security-monitoring workstations are standard desktop workstations that can access one or many site simultaneously. Site monitoring duties can be balanced and shared across any number of monitoring locations.
Vigilos ESM User Access
The Vigilos ESM software at the end-user workstation is a browser and Java-based software application. Users can launch the application from any web browser, and no Vigilos client software must be pre-loaded on a user's computer. Although many users may prefer a VPN or other secure network configuration, it is possible to allow remote users to access the ESM System via a standard Internet connection.
Integrating Devices and Locations
The Vigilos software communicates with the integrated hardware through device and system drivers. These drivers are analogous to Microsoft® Windows® printer drivers because they allow communication to and from various devices, they communicate in protocols that the hardware understands, and devices are easily added, configured and controlled through the common interface. The Vigilos development team has built drivers for various systems that standardize the information to and from supported sub-systems. Hardware manufacturers provide communication protocols to the Vigilos development organization.
Vigilos ESM Software at Secured Locations
At each facility or location, devices and systems to be monitored and controlled by the Vigilos ESM platform are connected to one or more standard PC appliance running Vigilos software device drivers. These software drivers communicate with and control each hardware and software component incorporated into the overall solution.
The appliances running Vigilos device drivers are in turn connected to a"front-end appliance" running the Vigilos on-site management software that processes real-time event rules, manages network connections, initiates event notifications, and handles many other supervisory tasks. For small facilities, or where relatively few cameras, devices and other sensors need to be deployed, the tasks executed by the device appliance and supervisory front-end appliance can be consolidated into a single hardware appliance.
System users monitor, control, configure and manage all aspects of their security system using the Vigilos ESM client software, which can be activated by authorized users anywhere with an authorized network connection. Consequently, the Vigilos ESM system can be accessed on-site, off-site within the enterprise WAN, or even by other organizations outside the enterprise WAN if appropriate permissions are granted.
Vigilos Vault for Enterprise Deployment
The Vigilos ESM Vault software enables total control, monitoring and management of multiple locations, and also provides complete enterprise-wide historical reporting capabilities of all activity across the enterprise.
Because Vigilos ESM Vault software incorporates the highly scalable Oracle database and runs on HP-9000 series hardware, ESM Vault deployments can scale to support unlimited numbers of locations, cardholders, systems, and users.
